Frequently Asked Questions

Have you ever driven home and not remembered anything about the journey, or been engrossed in a book and not been conscious of time passing? If so, you’ve been in a state of focused attention, not unlike the feeling of being Hypnotised.

During Hypnosis, you will be guided into a similar state so that beneficial suggestions can be directed towards your subconscious mind.

In this relaxed state, of focused attention your mind is more responsive to suggestion. In a therapeutic setting, the suggestions are designed to be beneficial to help you change unhelpful thought patterns.

Clients often comment about how “ordinary” Hypnosis feels – it’s not unlike daydreaming – you can often hear everything that is being said whilst in a deeply relaxed state. In fact, you could think of it as guided daydreaming.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy & Psychotherapy is future oriented:

I practise ‘Solution Focused’ Therapy which is designed to reduce anxiety and calm the mind. As the name suggests, it focuses on solutions for the future, rather than analysing problems of the past.

Provided you are willing to make changes to the way you think, the therapy can be highly effective in relieving the symptoms of anxiety and stress. Focusing on solutions means we do not dwell on problems.

Instead we:

  • acknowledge where you are currently
  • identify where you want to be
  • help you to make the necessary changes

There are many different kinds of Psychotherapy, all of which aim to help people overcome stress or emotional problems. Psychotherapy involves talking together to help clients overcome their difficulties. Psychotherapy is often referred to as a ‘talking treatment’.

The type of Psychotherapy I practise is Solution Focused Psychotherapy which is future oriented and avoids problem talk. It does not involve analysing painful memories from the past. If you have experienced unpleasant events, we acknowledge they happened and help you get from where you are to where you want to be.

The initial consultation will be our first meeting together. During this consultation I will complete a very simple fact finding mission, ask a few medical questions and gain a collection of information relevant to you, your problems, your sleep patterns and more importantly how I can help you and what you want to achieve from the process.

I will then explain how the brain works in very simple, understandable terms and show you how relevant this is to you and your situation. I will then explain a little bit about the process we are going to undertake and a rough estimate of the amount of sessions required to achieve our goal (however this is never an exact science).

The CNHC (Complimentary & Natural Healthcare Council) was set up by the government to protect the public. We do this by providing an independent UK register of complementary healthcare practitioners and protection of the public is their sole purpose.

The CNHC set the standards that practitioners need to meet to get onto and then stay on the register. All CNHC registrants have agreed to be bound by the highest standards of conduct and all of them are professionally trained and fully insured to practise.

The CNHC govern a wide range of organisations for the use of complementary healthcare to enhance the UK’s health and well-being, raising awareness of complementary healthcare and wherever possible increase access to the 16 complimentary & natural healthcare disciplines they register, of which Clinical hypnotherapy is recognised.

The CNHC’s register is approved as an Accredited Register by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (PSA). The government recommends that people should use only an accredited register when consulting a health practitioner who is not regulated by law.

General Medical Council guidance confirms that doctors are able to refer patients to practitioners on accredited registers such as the CNHC and this could help ease the strain on the NHS.

Anyone can claim to be a complementary health practitioner so by choosing a CNHC practitioner you can make that choice with confidence.

CNHC registration is accepted by some health cash plans and insurers for reimbursement of treatment costs. Please click here for a comprehensive list of participants.

The Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH) was originally founded in 2010 by David Newton, considered by many to be the father of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. By the time it was fully launched in 2011, the AfSFH had welcomed many Solution Focused Hypnotherapists on board, who wanted to join and be represented by a professional body solely dedicated to the discipline of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. Since then, the organisation has grown from strength to strength, and represent a growing number of therapists both nationally and internationally. The AfSFH hold the only professional register dedicated to Solution Focused Hypnotherapists who are appropriately qualified & insured and abide by our Code of Conduct, Performance & Ethics, and are required to meet ongoing standards in their continuous professional development.

To ensure that we comply with the NCH, AfSFH and CNHC guidelines, we hold full insurance. Details of which can be provided on request.
